Coraline

Coraline is a hand sculpted/animated thing that just came out.

I’ll start off by saying it’s beautiful. The beauty alone was worth the price of admission. I can’t believe everything was hand sculpted, the amount of time that would take hurts my brain.

We saw it in 3-d too, which was interesting because it was a new fangled, more subtle 3-d than what i had seen in the past. Because of the previous night’s shenanigans, i was worried the glasses would give me a headache, but lo and behold, i was fine.

Some obvious comparisons pop-up when thinking about this movie; Spirited Away and Alice in Wonderland.  Spirited Away is often called “the Japanese Alice in Wonderland”. I think S.A. surpasses A.i.W. in every way possible (it is prob top 5 all time for me). I have to put Coraline ahead of Alice as well.  All 3 movies have an independently thinking girl, discontent with her situation in life wander into another dimension where some bitch runs the show. The girl bests the bitch in each scenario and makes out wiser and stronger.  All three try to teach a lesson, and this might be where they deviate the most in their appeal and content. Alice shows you not to run around chasing your fancy, but to stay put and do your math homework like a good girl should. Coraline also seemed to have a boring lesson; Be content with what you have, your parents really do care for you, even if they are a drag. And then of course there is Spirited Away, which like every other japanimation was a little bit luddite, a little bit anti-glutton, and a whole lot of interconnectedness with the environment.

anyway, nothing smart ass to say about this one. It was thoroughly enjoyable, but still second to Spirited Away in the girl-alternate reality-bitch queen genre.

PS.: Just noticed that Tim Burton (did Coraline) is doing a remake of Alice . Might have to rearrange this list in the future….

Going to see “Yes Man” tonight, so be prepared for heaping pile of negativity. Yes Please!
