The second installment of Commence Breath Holding is here. These are some movies we’re looking forward to and why we are excited/not-excited for them. Today is Quentin Tarantino’s birthday, so we’ll start with his newest project.
Matt: This movie looks crass, violent, and slightly ridiculous. Classic Tarantino. I’m very much looking forward to his take on WWII and for a change of pace in the war movie department. We’ll see how well he pulls it off. From the trailer it looks promising and entertaining. An all-star (albeit random) cast that includes Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, and B.J. Novak. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson. Intriguing.
Peter: Being anal-retentive my first thought was, “why did they purposely misspell both title words.” I’m not really certain what the aim is in that regard. Though I’m certain this film will become a success, I have to wonder what the aim is for Tarantino. You have to wonder if he feels his oeuvre has stagnated somewhat…It’s as if the critics (and viewers) have caught on so to speak with his “thing”–the non-linear action, aestheticized violence, numerous pop culture references, esoteric allusions to film, So, while I am looking forward to a new and unique take on a well tread genre, I have to wonder if this is Quentin’s attempt at breaking the old mold of WWII films using his own old mold.
Bjorn: MM-MM Bitch! That’s a tasty movie!
Kevin: Tarantino’s always fun to watch, but I’m concerned about the rushed schedule to get this movie out this year…
Matt: I posted about this one back on the old tumblr. I think this movie looks great though. I love Zooey and I think I like the kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun. Either way, early festival reviews are good and it’s not entirely sappy from what I have read. I think these two could be a better duo than Zach Braph and Natalie Portman. This will definitely fall under the “guilty pleasure” category for me.
Peter: 500 Days of Summer: Since I’m not in Austin I feel perpetually behind in new cinematic productions. Though not a culture abyss by any means, news trickles to me a little bit slower here. As a result, I wasn’t aware of this particular production. I loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Brick, The Lookout, and of course in Third Rock from the Sun (which I think is a sorely underrated sitcom). I’m sensitive and shit, so I won’t call this a “guilty pleasure” movie. I’m generally looking forward to it. Maybe Zooey will sing too!
Bjorn: OMG her name is summer! It works on so many levels!! Skeet skeet barf. I can’t wait to tear this movie apart (aka hide my tears in a mask of sarcasm).
Kevin: Smarmy, smug, sallow, shite, self-righteous, standard-fare, sad, stereotypical, stupid, sorry.. -’S’ words to replace ‘Summer’ with.
Matt: Another movie about a crazy night in Vegas. I just think I like the cast in this, plus the premise is ever so slightly different than every other “we screwed up in Vegas” movie. Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, and Brad Cooper are starring and the trailer looks like the have some good chemistry. Same director as Old School, so you can expect a lot of the same tricks, but it still looks promising. However, I never put it past a comedy to just completely suck.
Peter: Unfortunately, I find myself being less and less amused by the crass comedies. Hopefully that doesn’t foreshadow some sort of adult maturation on my part because I’ve really been enjoying my life as a derelict hedonist of sorts. So, as much as I love beer soaked antics, I can’t help but be skeptical. I hope this movie will tickle me like so few movies can, but I fear it will ultimately leave me a bit disappointed…
Bjorn: If you liked “what happens in vegas” and “snake eyes” you will love this!!
Kevin: Funny in a recycled way, which doesn’t disqualify it from being an enjoyable movie. 5 to 1 you don’t remember this film 2 days after viewing though.
Matt: I expressed my excitement for this movie in Kevin’s post, but I’d like to reiterate. The monsters look amazing, the kid seems to be a spot on choice, and Spike Jonze is amazing. I think it looks to go deep into the story and present some scary and amazing scenes, but still
Peter: Spike Jonze is a talented visionary. This is a very intriguing concept…though I have to admit, I was never that attached to the book as a child. As a result, my excitement is purely based on how Jones translates the imaginative plot line of the book into a cinematic product. I suspect it will be quite a visual feast.
Bjorn: I’m skeptical on how you turn such a short book into a feature lenth film, but i trust spike jonez, who?? spike jonez to make it happen. It’ll at least look cool.
Kevin: Guaranteed eye-candy in a worst case scenario. Hopefully far more than that.
