Monday Thoughts – That Hangover Cure

i can has cheezburger

This isn’t so much about a particular food, but more about a particular place.  I live in one of the best places for delicious food choices and it’s often too hard to even decide where to go.  Especially after a late night and your brain is pounding and making decisions is the last thing you want to do.

I hope you’ll add to this list, but I’m gonna tell you 5 of my favorite places here in Austin right after the jump.  Feel free to give me more suggestions for some good Saturday/Sunday morning dining.

Mi Madres

Mi Madres

Mi Madres

Best Breakfast Taco.  People all over will tell you there are some good tacos all over Austin.  I also know everyone has “that secret spot,” but Mi Madres taco’s are in a class of their own.  Somewhat pricey, but two will be too much for most people and the potatoes they use are amazing.  Basically like chopped homefries mixed in with your taco.  Perfect amount of substance and grease to get you rolling in the morning.  I’d recommend the Migas (#8) or the Bacon Egg Potato and Cheese (#0).

Red River Cafe

This is your classic American diner.  The food is just above par.  Nothing you’d consistently rave about, but the atmosphere is great and the prices are extremely fair.  I love the combination pancake platter with some chocolate chip pancakes.  Good coffee and a friendly wait staff make this place a winning combo.  It’s also a nice place to enjoy some good conversation and relax before starting the day.  Definitely spent many hours here reading the paper, talking with friends and slamming coffee after coffee.  As far as budget morning breakfast, this place takes the (pan)cake.  Yes!  I love a bad pun!

Cherrywood Cafe (fka Quack’s Maplewood Cafe)

Another one of those great little neighborhood joints.  Very unassuming place.  Stark concrete floors with furniture that looks like it’s been assembled from multiple trips to Goodwill.  However, that doesn’t take away from the food and coffee.  Excellent coffee with a good little menu to boot.  The big winner is the Sol Taco though.  It’s amazing what they try to fit in that little ole tortilla, and it’s so tasty.  A good price and one of those tacos will fill you up.  The waitstaff is uber-hip, but friendly for the most part (some seem like they probably should have slept the night before rather than taking 2 adderall and going to Beauty Bar and after party before working the 7 AM shift).  The Sol Taco alone is worth any guff you get from hipsters though.  Definitely a relaxing vibe too with a nice outdoor area.

Quatros

This has been a new addition and might only work if you are a fan of soccer.  They have a good deal on the weekends for simple breakfast tacos and some other brunch stuff.  It’s sort of trendy and you have to battle the West Campus madness, but for a good place to watch some Footy, cheap beers (hair of the dog, I say), and solid breakfast tacos, this is as good a place as any.  Tons of TV’s with some good soccer fans to keep you entertained.

Don Juan and Only

Don Juan and Only

Juan in a Million

Every Friday for lunch.  This place is pretty famous and was also recently on the Travel Channel I believe.  Basically, they have a huge breakfast taco for just a few bucks.  It makes about 4 regular sized tacos and it’s pretty damn delicious.  Killer deal and a great cure for what ails you.  I’d recommend this place to anyone looking for a good deal and a lot of food.  Don’t even look at the menu.  Just ask for a Don Juan with 3 extra tortillas.  And don’t forget Austin’s best handshake from Juan when you leave.

Those are my picks.  Anyone have any others?

torchy's is constantly my fave, my definite go-to. queso as well as the monk special or dirty sanchez...mmmmm

as much as i love juan's it can be a bit much if i'm too hungover; the spiciness of that salsa, the annoying drive on chavez, and the piled portions can churn my stomach in an unfriendly way on certain occasions.

Boohoo, stumble out of the parking garage and find your clothes. You should be happy you can still eat.

In high school we'd cruise down red bud to lake austin magnolia after a late night. hard to top their mud with a sandwich or giant omelet.

And this is why I eagerly await your return. You better be on the eastside
for some fine dining adventures. I figure we can test out some Austin
    Friday Feasts.
  • thebluebird
I'm down for that. I'll be on Green Velvet (Roost) for the next few nights
at least. Let the dining adventures commence.
  • I once lived across the street from Red River Cafe. They made Chicken Fried Steak @ breakfast for me whenever I stumbled in. It was love.
