Monday Thoughts: Assaulting Urban Austin

—–Sorry this wasn’t posted yesterday.  The server was on the fritz—–

So I told you I’d bring you my thoughts on the Austin version of the New Belgium Brewing Urban Assault Ride and here they come, so get your bike helmet on and your chamois ready for action.

Obviously, the hipsters were out in full force.

I will go ahead and make it clear: this event is awesome(pardon the awkwardness…I’m bad on camera).  I went into it with decent expectations, but hating the fact that I had to wake up at 6:00 AM on a Sunday.  So my anticipation at the time was…low.  However, once we set out to the starting point, things picked up.  Maybe it was the caffeine (not half-caffeine…thank god we found the real coffee in my house), or perhaps just the wake up bike ride, but once we got going Steph and I never stopped smiling all morning.

The ride was around 20 miles by my guess, and we decided to do it more leisurely than hardcore.  I think this was the best decision to be honest. We rode at a good pace, but definitely were far, far away from the people going WAY too fast.  We completely it in around 3 hours; complete with hefty breaks at stations, plenty of water, watermelon and a small detour through the AWESOME new Zilker.  Check out the map of our route below.

21 miles. Give or take.

The end of the trip was probably the best part.  A great feeling of accomplishment (hey, it wasn’t too long a ride, but we did it pretty quickly) come over you and there are 2 free huge New Belgium beers waiting for you.  When we got there, there was a huge line to get your “official time” recorded, but we opted to go straight to beer tent (great decision) and just relax and watch some flatlanding and mini-bike limbo.  All and all, a very worthwhile and fun event.  The activities were fun and biking/exploring Austin on a bike was great.  Highly recommended to all who enjoy some outdoor activities.
