Monday Thoughts: Moon

We just saw Moon last night.  This is a movie I’ve talked about a couple times on here and it FINALLY made it to Austin.  Well, today I really want to talk about this movie and decided jump into the realm of Bjorn for a little bit.

There are very few actors in this movie.  One could argue that Sam Rockwell is really the only actor, but there were a few spots for mostly non-essential characters (except Kevin Spacey as the computer, Gerty).  The main workload goes to Sam Rockwell who plays Sam Bell throughout the movie.

This movie is hard to talk about without spoilers, but I’ll do my best.  This was great sci-fi.  Not only that, but it was reminiscent of 2001: A Space Odyssey and other, more suspenseful sci-fi movies of yesteryear.  Not so much the new sci-fi with endless splodies and laser beams (not that I don’t like me some splodies).  The dialogue is fairly sparse (it is just Sam after all), but there is enough of the characters that you really get connected.  I was very much concerned about the well being of Sam as the movie progressed.  What really set the mood was the great score by the insanely talented Clint Mansell.  The music was simple yet very moving.  It was always timed right and definitely helped make the movie all the more unsettling and moving.

The real highlight was Sam Rockwell, though.  This is where you would typically say he stole the show, but it makes no sense here, because he literally was the show.  He played his part very well.  I think his best role yet.  I like him as an actor (although I’ve yet to see Choke) and I’ve typically been very impressed by his chops.  This role was no different.  I felt like he played the part convincingly well.  His acting prowess alone is worth the price of admission in my opinion.  Overall, the movie was highly enjoyable.  A throwback to classic sci-fi, but with a solid and original plot.  While clunky and somewhat clumsy at times, the plot was still fun and believable.
I’d give it 7 out of 10 stars.

Sam Rockwell gets 9 out of 10 stars.
