Commence Breath Holding Vol. III – SciFi in Your Face

Here comes the third installment of our Movie preview piece, Commence Breath Holding.  Here, we all discuss some trailers and movies that are upcoming and might be interesting to you/us.  It’s an open forum for the hbh staff to discuss some movies and hopefully show you something you might not have seen coming.

This session is all about SciFi.  It’s hard to come by good scifi these days, but Moon inspired me to write about some upcoming fantasy movies that may be decent, but then again, it’s always hard to tell with scifi.

Daybreakers (January 8, 2010)

Matt – Vampires.  CHECK.  Future.  CHECK.  Explosions.  CHECK.  This movie has many of the requisites for a “good” sci-fi movie for me.  I can’t say I’m insanely pumped because it seems like it’s been done before with Blade, but just not quite so futuristic.  However, it looks pretty stylistic and I’m a sucker for popcorn fluff movies.  Also, there’s no way it could be as bad as Ultraviolet.

Bjorn – I’m done with vampires. Unless you are russian or swedish, don’t tell me about vampires. this doesn’t look too bad tho, a mix between the matrix, blade, and jurassic park. anything with sam neill is a JP spin off to me.

Peter – Before this trailer was even half-way to completion, I was thinking to myself, “holy crap, this is going to be great.”  Expectations are sure to let me down, but I am definitely pumped.  When it comes to films, I have many interest levels and this one looks to have a lock down on many of them: vampires, great ethical quandaries, and fighting. This is the first time in a long time that I am openly excited about a movie.  Sidenote: As for Bjorn’s recalcitrance to watch non-Swede/Russian vampire films, may I point to “Thirst,” Park Chan-wook’s latest offering?  I have yet to see it, but the Frenchies awarded it the Jury Prize at Cannes this year.

Kevin – Just take me to the future already.  Dark, Rainy, & Sinister; Post-Apocalyptic; Utopian; whatever.  I could stop consuming vast amounts of popcorn-butter (actually it’s almost straight palm-oil) and soda if I didn’t have to go into movie theaters to get my fix.  Write me in for one Large Popcorn vat and a liter of cola for this one.

District 9 (August 14th, 2009)

Matt -  This intrigues me.  Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp were slated to do the Halo movie, but that fell through.  Instead, they decided to make up some original material and do it at a much lower budget.  Blomkamp is supposedly insanely talented and the buzz from Comic Con has really catapulted this movie to a must see for me.  I’ll be checking it out.

Bjorn – I think this looks cool, but it looks dangerously close to trying to teach a lesson. WE CANT BE TAUGHT. I hate different!!

Peter – I suppose it’s obvious, but upon seeing the trailer I immediately began to associate the situation of the aliens in South Africa with that of blacks during the apartheid era.  I’m not usually one for Sci-Fi flicks, but the depth of this movie and the possible parallels it surfaces has me quite intrigued.

Kevin – My understanding is that we don’t understand what this film is actually about.  I’m fine with that.  Yet more popcorn will be consumed.

SURROGATES trailer in HD

Surrogates (September 25, 2009)

Matt – The return of Bruce Willis to sci-fi.  I can’t wait for this.  I hear the source material comic book is outstanding.  I’m actually trying to find a copy of the first volume right now.  But this looks to be a great story with good action and some twists and turns to boot.  Bruce Willis is one of my favorite action/sci-fi stars and I’m sure he’ll be doing some great ass-kicking in this movie.  Definitely going to see it.

Bjorn – BRUCE WILLIS!!!!! ROBITS!!!

Peter – Admittedly, the trailer does have me a bit intrigued.  The involvement of Bruce Willis, however, has me equally skeptical.  To be certain, it should prove to be a great visual display of technical wizardry via explosions, fights, etc.  Furthermore, the concept appears to posses great potential.  Unfortunately, I am mildly distrustful of the filmmakers ability to carry the conceptual weight of the film without being bogged down by didacticism or its opposite, unharnessed informality.

Kevin – Having read the graphic novel this is ‘based on’, I wish they’d stuck a little closer to the roots; however, you will find me chomping on glorious golden kernels, rooting for Bruce Willis once again.

9 (September 9, 2009)

Matt – Shane Acker released a great short film to the webs a few years back.  It got quite a bit of buzz and now it’s a full on movie.  Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov are attached to the film.  Lord knows they have come up with some interesting things in the past.  I think the combo of the cool short film and the production those two big names bring in make this at least worth checking out.  Looks to be a great visual film and hopefully, they have made the story good enough for a feature film.

BJorn – “Timur Babelkok of Wanted”, that’s a good thing?  I think this will be good. It’s about time there was a non-childish cg movie. Just bc it’s not real people doesn’t mean it has to be a cute cartoon, I don’t know why that’s so difficult for these movie types. However, Jennifer Connelly does looks as cute as ever.

Peter – What’s going on here?  Is this for kids? Not for kids?  How am I supposed to feel concern or attachment to these tiny burlap sacks?

Kevin - The short film was cool, and Timur is a very promising director/producer.  Wanted was a fun flick (far superior to its source material), and the “***-Watch” films have been exciting stuff.  Tim Burton continues to be the man as well.  I suspect these little burlap people are also motivated by the desire for popcorn, so I have no problem identifying with them.

  • I like me a good vampire movie...and I even liked the Blade and Underworld series (though I don't remember seeing Blade II). Don't think the husband will go to the movie with me, though...and now that I think about it, I don't think he's liked any vampire movie. Weirdo.

I also think Surrogates looks good. Bruce Willis was kick ass in 12 Monkeys and the 5th element.
