After Will Muschamp’s Longhorn defense held strong against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday night, I felt compelled to create a post at least partially in his honor.
The Fire Brand!
And with a name like Will, there is no shortage of songs from which to choose. Life would have been much harder for both of us if he were baptized as Garfield (Late John Garfield Blues) or even Dominic (Dominic, St. Dominic’s Preview). So, thanks to the parents of one William Larry Muschamp, both HBH and Longhorn nation breathe a bit easier.
If one were to solely consider the title, there is no better tribute to Mr. Muschamp than “Song for Willie” by Magnolia Electric Co. Like much of Jason Molina’s work, this song carries a sadness that looms over it, marching it forward in search of something greater. As the Horns march themselves to California, the closing line rings true:”As long as their are sundowns, there will always be the west.”
As if we were progressing backwards into the past, we again step further back in time for our next track by Johnny Otis: Willie and the Hand Jive. Is there a better song for such an effusive and animated defensive coordinator sending signals to his Grade A unit? Hell, no. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that this song is a freaking jam.

Song For Willie-Magnolia Electric CoQuite different in style is our next song, “William, It was Really Nothing,” by The Smiths. The song is deceivingly funny.
“How can you stay with a fat girl who says ‘oh, would you like to marry me, and if you like you can buy the ring,’ she doesn’t care about anything.”
If nothing else, it reminds me of Will’s own relationship with that fat girl over in the SEC, Auburn.
